Frances and Michel, from Holland, got married on a day of April showers and brillant sunshine. The leaves were out on the trees and the daffodils were in full bloom. (If you're living further south, the seasons are about 3-4 weeks later up here than in London.) There was a fantastic display of falconry, whisky tasting, and a haggis addressed by the piper. Frances, whose father is from Peebles, certainly included all the right ingredients for a great Scottish wedding! The ceremony was delayed slightly by a SatNav that decided to send some guests travelling from Liverpool to Edinburgh via Glasgow, but the Revd Melville Schofield soon had everyone totally relaxed!

Pipe Major Iain Grant did his usual thing too - not only playing his pipes, but explaining the history of the castle, the symbolism of a quaich, and generally being entertainer in chief!

Colin's niece, the flower girl, stole the show momentarily when she reached the end of the aisle, much to everyone's amusement. After the service, we all made our way across town to Pollock Halls, in the shadow of Arthurs Seat (where Colin had proposed!) The ceilidh was a huge success - I don't think I've ever seen so many people joining in so enthusiastically! Add a Scottish Hotel and a wedding, and you get one big party! Barbara and Brendan got married in style at the Melville Castle hotel just outside Edinburgh. Yvonne from Scottish Wedding Consultants had organised the day, including entertainment on Friday night. A little bird told me that the Guinness ran out in the early hours of Saturday morning! Still, Barbara obviously had an early night and looked radiant. The children had a great time - a whole castle to themselves, complete with secret passages! The only dampner on the day was that England won the rugby...... I was meant to be there to look at new printing papers and to find out if there were any new albums that met my criteria.... Put me in a camera shop, or trade fair, and I seem to go weak-kneed. I don't seem to be able to resist the allure of all that padding, zips and velcro!

...I only wasted two hours before my head over-ruled my heart ("there's no such thing as a perfect camera bag / you've got enough already / it's a waste of money") and I moved on - to trying to justify buying body armour when I'm a wedding photographer!

Since I was SO far south (!), I decided to do a round Britain tour visiting friends who seem to think that Scotland is too far away (and cold) to visit. I made it all the way to the south coast near Chichester, saw loads of people in London, and then made my way back north via Suffolk and Huntingdon.

In one of those bizzare moments, I attended a friends 50th birthday party and the first person I saw was Mike, the best man from Paulo and Karen's wedding, 10 days before.

...Oh, and a photo of Oliver's snake, having it's weekly meal (don't look if you don't like Attenborough's programmes!)

...I stayed with her and her son Tom in Richmond, and the arguments for and against a third Heathrow runway became immediately clear as I was woken up at 6am by a 747 at about 1000 feet, on it's final approach to landing.

Paulo and Karen's wedding

It was an especially romantic Valentine's Day for Paulo and Karen as they got married in the amazing Comlongon Castle near Dumfries. They got married in the really old (medieval?) tower, complete with a fireplace big enough to stand in and flags hanging from the high ceilings.

The gardens even looked nice in the depth of winter - despite the previous two days brilliant sunshine deciding to disappear on the day! Another small, intimate wedding, and a delightful one. Craig and Mel's wedding - a lovely international yet intimate gathering of family and friends at Castle Venlaw. Their 14 month old daughter nearly stole the limelight as she decided to go walkabout during the ceremony but she seemed to know everybody, so was quite happy. The snow held off, the sun shone, and the champagne flowed. And there was an amazing cake, in the shape of New Zealand! On a bitterly cold day, the fires inside were lit, adding warmth to the delightfully relaxed atmosphere inside the house.

Geri and David brought their family and friends up from Norfolk in a fleet of cars and a minibus, battling their way through the north Yorkshire snow storms. Of course, having arrived, the snow vanished!

A great time was had by all, with lots of tears and emotion, along with all the happiness and celebration. After a superb meal, I met my first ever wedding singer, Lee Live, and together we tried to teach the wedding party a few ceilidh dances, which resulted in a very creditable 'Strip the Willow.' Ceri and Aileen got married on George Street and were piped round to the Royal College on Queen Street The threatened rain held off, and I managed to get some quick photos of them in Queen Street Gardens before the cold set in. I even managed to assemble all the guests onto the main staircase for a group photo before dinner! It was an intimate wedding, with just 20 guests, including four children. The bride was nearly out-shone by her beautiful daughter, four year Harriet, who was only let down by her shyness! The men played golf in the morning, on Guthrie's own 9 hole course (although from what I saw, 'golf' is a loose description....) I stayed in my friend Philip's place in Marrakech, the Riad Porte Royale for a few days, then off to Fez, an 8 hour train ride away.

Fez is a smaller, quieter version of Marrakech. There are no annoying scooters, or motorised transport of any kind, allowed inside the city walls. Everything is transported by human or mule power. Even the mules wear rubber shoes (although that's for grip on the the cobbled hills rather than for quietness.) As the French say, it's 'plus gentil.' I stayed with 'slightly mad and English 'Louis at his Dar Mernissi - you can read his entertaining blog about life in Fez here (of course, all the bits about my appetite for gin are totally made up!) They certainly knew how to make life logistically difficult for themselves! The preparations and reception was on the Isle of Mull, but the wedding ceremony itself was a 30 minute ferry ride away in the church at Kilchoan, on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Luckily the rain held off, if not the wind. But the were some lovely photographs of everybody getting on and off, and Louise wasn't too bothered about getting her dress dirty on the not-too-clean ferry. I hope all the pictures tell the rest of the story.
