Prices and Frequently Asked Questions

How long do you spend at my wedding? As long as you want. I charge by the wedding, not by the hour. Normally I will turn up an hour or so before the ceremony, and stay until the last dance.

What can I do with the disk you give us? Anything you want as long as it is for personal, non-profit or non-commercial use.

The possibilities are endless: Firstly, I recommend you duplicate it, and keep one copy somewhere safe. After looking through them and deciding which ones you like, you can take the CD to SnappySnaps, Boots, or other high street printers and get your own prints made.

You can also upload your chosen pictures to on line services such as www.photobox.co.uk so that you and your friends can view and order their own prints. Prices are typically in the region of 15p for a 6"x4" print to £1.99 for a 10"x8" print. You can make prints up to at least A2 size from the files.

With the right software, you can make a slideshow of the pictures, and send it to your friends on a CD. Some couples have made a DVD slideshow of the pictures, and others have made their own web site of their wedding day, using my photographs. Others have framed a selection of the b&w prints and hung them in their house.
What sort of album packages do you offer? I prefer to charge for my time and my skill, rather than my ability to mark up other peoples' charges. I do not want to carry a large stock of different albums to suit all tastes. Therefore I do not 'do' different album packages. You have complete control over the prints you want (via the CD) and I can advise you where you can buy a suitable album to put them in (costing under £50). Another nice alternative is this magazine style album. You may wish to just frame some of my black and white prints, or you may wish to print a vast number of photographs and put them in an album of your choice: it's up to you, but I'm always happy to advise and help. If you want me to do all the work, I offer a bespoke album services. The album is 'magazine style' and printed on a matt paper. It is hard bound and costs around £500 depending on the size and number of pages. You can see more details here. Please contact me for further information of this unique service.

How do you describe your style? Documentary wedding photography focuses on capturing the emotions and the details of the wedding, without interfering in the normal course of the day. I focus on interactions, reactions, details and ambience. While my emphasis is on candid, natural photographs captured unobtrusively, I do, of course, photograph formal posed groupings of the bride and groom, wedding party and families in a short period of time following the ceremony. My background is as an editorial photographer. I have (and still do) work on numerous national newspapers and magazines, and specialise in 'fly on the wall' documentary style stories. (My editorial web site is here: www.grosset.co.uk) I really do offer a 'reportage' or 'photojournalism' style, phrases that are often used wildly in wedding photography circles without any real experience behind their use. For me, your wedding is a magazine story. There are big centrefold spread pictures and there are small detail photographs. In between there are a mass of pictures that capture the atmosphere and joy of your day. Your friends laughing, your mother looking on proudly, the young bridesmaids looking nervous, the bride looking radiant, the groom checking his watch - these are all moments that are waiting to be captured.
What do you charge? My basic charge is £2000. This includes VAT. The only extras are for travel (if I think I cannot get back home before 1a.m. I may charge for a local b&b, and if you want me to travel out of my local, Scottish, area I may charge extra to cover my costs) and those additional services listed.

What qualifications do you have? None - just 20 years experience of successfully photographing people from many different backgrounds (Prime Ministers to the Homeless) in different situations. A wedding is no different, just more enjoyable. Wedding photography is possibly one of the few areas left for the documentary photographer to make a mark. It is a combination of co-operation with the client (the bride) and the subject matter (the wedding party). While the results are unlikely to be published, the finished story (or wedding album) is likely to survive long into the future. A 'Diploma in Wedding Photography' is a qualification I would not recommend.

What about the copyright of the photographs? I retain copyright in all the photographs I take. However, you can make prints, publish on the web and distribute copies for private use. You cannot use my photographs to make money by using them, for instance, for editorial or advertising purposes. In return, I undertake not to use them for commercial purposes. I retain the right to use the photographs for the promotion of my business (such as displays at wedding fairs, promotional cards or advertising in wedding magazines.)

What extras do you offer? I can organise any of the options described above: albums, duplicate diskss, slideshows on DVD, web sites, and even your print order. Please contact me so that we can discuss your requirements and my charges.

What are your prices and packages? There is one package, costing £2000 (for weekend weddings in 2008) You get all the photographs I take (normally around 400 pictures) as high resolution .jpg files on a data DVD. You can use these files to get your own prints made, at prices of around 15p for a 6x4 inch print, 29p for a 5x7 inch print and £1.99 for a 10x8 inch print (based on prices at www.photobox.co.uk) You also get 20 black & white prints (hand printed with archival inks on A4 archival paper) which I choose, to tell the story of your day. I also put a large (100-200 pictures) selection up on my web site, so that your guests (or friends who couldn't attend) can view the photographs and, if they wish, order copies for themselves. An album with approx. 100 photos is an extra £500 - see below for full details.

Shorter, mid-week weddings (Monday to Thursday, no longer than 5 hours) can also be covered, for a reduced cost.

Traditionally, wedding photographers make a large percentage of their profits from the print and album sales of a wedding, and you may find the final cost of your wedding photography increasing dramatically by using my competitors.

"Photos are the lasting memory you will have of the day and are really worth investing in. Save money on the cake, cut down on the flowers, but not the photos - that would be my recommendation."
